The history of Almere

From Zuiderzee to Modern City

Almere is a unique Dutch city built entirely on artificial land. Its history begins in 1968 when the southern part of Flevoland was reclaimed as part of the Zuiderzee Works.

In 1975, construction of Almere officially began as part of the National Urban Plan to accommodate the growing population of the Randstad. The first district to be developed was Almere-Haven (1976), followed by Almere-Stad (1980) and later Almere-Buiten (1984).

Each district was given its own character:

  • Haven as the experimental starter neighbourhood,
  • Stad as the commercial centre, and
  • Buiten as a green residential area.

In the 1990s, Almere-Hout and the industrial area Almere-Hout Oost followed. From the 2000s, Almere expanded further with Almere-Poort and the ambitious Almere-Pampus project.

In 2022, Almere was officially granted city status.

Today, Almere is the fastest-growing city in the Netherlands with over 220,000 inhabitants and aims to reach 350,000 by 2030.
